A written budget: every plugin has a reason, a weight and an owner. Five essentials, then only what earns its place.
Inside the budget. Five essentials plus what the site actually needs.
WordPress sites you can edit yourself and that still load fast
Lean custom themes, a strict plugin budget, caching and a server I can tune myself, because I run servers as well as write PHP. For businesses that want control without a slow site. From €1,500.
- Block editor
- theme.json
- Redis object cache
- PHP 8.3 with OPcache
Why it stays fast after you start editing
A WordPress site slows down a plugin and a page builder at a time. These are the guard rails that stop that happening.
Block theme, no builder
Layouts as block patterns you fill in. You change text and images freely; spacing and fonts stay consistent.
Written plugin budget
Every plugin listed with its reason and weight. Twelve is the ceiling; most sites need fewer.
Custom PHP where it counts
Small features written as your own documented plugin instead of three heavy ones that half fit.
Caching in two layers
Full-page cache for visitors and Redis object cache so the admin and forms stay quick too.
A server I tune
Nginx, current PHP, OPcache, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 and daily off-site backups with a tested restore.
Editor training
A recorded walk-through of your own site, so adding a page next year does not need me.
The plugin audit: keep, replace with code, or delete
What I do first on every existing WordPress site. Change a decision and watch the front-end page weight move. Typical plugins, example weights: yours will differ.
Rebuild its layouts as block patterns.
One static hero image does the job on most sites.
Needed. Load its script only on the contact page.
Self-host two subset WOFF2 files instead.
Plain share links need no script.
Needed for Consent Mode. Keep, configure properly.
A core Query Loop block does the same.
Only if someone answers it. Load on click if kept.
The core gallery with a 3 KB lightbox.
GA4 through Tag Manager after consent instead.
Saves 873 KB per page (67 %). 3 kept, 5 replaced with code, 2 deleted: 3 of 10 plugins left.

When I would not use WordPress
WordPress is a good tool, not the only one.
- 01You need three pages and will never edit them. A static site is cheaper to host and has nothing to update.
- 02You mainly want to sell products. Start from the ecommerce options; WooCommerce is one of them, not automatically the answer.
- 03Nobody will apply updates. Either take a care plan or choose a hosted platform that updates itself.
Questions about WordPress
Is WordPress still a good choice?
Yes, for business sites you want to edit yourself. The block editor is mature, hosting is available everywhere and you are never locked to one company. It becomes a poor choice when it is overloaded with plugins and builders. Built lean and kept updated, it stays fast and secure for years.
How many plugins is too many?
There is no magic number, but past about twelve the cost of updates, conflicts and page weight usually outgrows the benefit. What matters more is what each plugin loads on the front end and whether it is maintained. I keep a written budget and replace small jobs with a few lines of code.
Can you fix my slow WordPress site?
Usually, yes. I measure first, then audit plugins, theme, images, caching and the server, and fix the slowest layer before touching anything cosmetic. You get before and after numbers. If the theme or builder itself is the problem, I will say so and price a rebuild separately.
